In Ohio, the Probate Court issues marriage licenses. Once issued, the license
is valid for 60 days. If it expires, you must reapply.

Both applicants must be present. The Court will not issue a license if either
applicant appears under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

To Obtain a Marriage License

• Bring cash or credit card for payment
• License fee is $43.00
• $3.00 credit card processing fee applies
• Certified copies are $3.00 each
• Application fee is non-refundable
• Both applicants must appear in person

Residency Requirements

• If marrying in Ohio, apply in the county where one applicant resides
• If out-of-state residents, apply where ceremony will take place
• Proof of Belmont County residency may be required

Information Needed

• Full names, addresses, birth dates, and birthplaces
• Parents’ names (including mother’s maiden name)
• Birth certificate if parent information is unknown
• Valid government-issued photo ID

Previous Marriages

If previously married, you must provide a certified copy of the final decree
or the date of death of your former spouse.

Licensed ministers, judges, mayors, and certain authorized officials may
perform ceremonies in Ohio.

Changing Your Name

You may choose to change your name after marriage. You must notify agencies
such as Social Security, banks, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Destination Weddings

If marrying outside the United States, you must follow the laws of that
country. No documentation is required by Belmont County.
